One thing that seems to help with good, accurate estimating is having job costs & expenses tracked in such an organized, retreivable way.

What software programs or manual systems do y'all use to help build & improve your estimating.

Pardon the double post (also in Elements of Business), but I want to hear from those that are mainly inot landscaping, as opposed to lawn maintenance.

Tracking your material costs should be easy enough.

A bit of background first ... at the start of each project the foreman are given a file with the following in it... a PO#, drawing/design, a description of the work to be done, a sheet with each task and the bid hours to do each.

We have tasks assigned to a number. example #5 is excavation, laying pavers #4 etc etc.
At the end of each day the foreman are required to fill out a worksheet and fill in the time spent at each task. The total number of hours is then transfered onto a computer each day. Job costing is then done at the end of each project. We do some other things ....hopefully you get the general idea.
