    Hi Guys

Just wanted to see if many others have had any oil leak issues on new Kohler 26.5 hp EFI's

I noticed after 4-5hrs on the engine. Took it into repair. They found leak and removed engine oil filter and the backing plate. Checked O rings etc put back together and tested ok.

Got it back and after one lawn it was leaking again.

Took it in to repair and they now think the plate behind the oil filter (some form of plastic) may be warping with heat and then leaking.
There is only one bolt in the centre holding it on. Then the filter onto it.

Now waiting on replacement oil filter backing plate.

    Bad design?

Anyone else come across this issue?

    Cheers
    Aussie

I've not heard anyone mention this, maybe you just happened to have gotten a backing plate not milled to tolerance. Keep us informed on the outcome.

I posted a reply to you at lunchtime, but don't know where the post went.
We were just at a dealership this weekend to look at a particular mower. The guy took us out to the shop to see it since it was a demo and was in for service. It was the same exact engine as you are asking about (26.5 EFI Kohler), and it was in for an oil leak. I couldn't tell where it was leaking because it was packed in there so tightly with the other mowers and the guy we were talking with didn't know where it was leaking either. he did say it had around 80 hours on it at the moment.

Hopefully a new backing plate fixes it. I will keep you up to date.

Lucky I have the old ZTR still. Im about to sell it in 1-2 weeks.
I dont need the new mower in the shop every few weeks.

I've got a older 28efi That's had 2 leaks in the same place. Both times I thought it was the oil filter mount or associated hardware. Turned out it was the case gasket both times. it started leaking right behind the spin on oil filer mount both times.

I also had a 28 efi that leaked around the pan gasket where it appeared as if coming from the oil filter area. This was a problem Kohler was aware of at the time, which was around 2008. They sent a new style gasket and sealer of which the dealer replaced, never another problem.

Were these 2 gaskets difficult to do?

I hope it doesn't have to go in again. Its been in the shop longer that i have owned it.

Not a terrible job, my dealer picked the mower up one day and brought it back the next.

Motor has to be removed from mower & the case split to replace the gasket. Unless the main crank seal is new then replacing it is a good idea since you can get right to it.

I hope its not a gasket.

The drip appears on the block behind the oil filter. Is this right were the pan gasket is also?

Not sure where the case gasket is. Is it above the oil filter?
