Hello all.....I have a existing lawn that is more than half killed by the heat this year. It also has a good deal of weeds crab grass..etc. What method(s) do you suggest to establish a new lawn and is it to late to do so here in NJ. the owner does not want sod.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Use a dethacher to get all of the dead grass and dead weeds up then core aerate, over seed and top dress with compost
You should be fine we probably won't get hard frosts for another month and if you top dress with compost the dark color will keep the soil warm, it will also hold moisture and protect the seed making for good take

you may not get the best results but i wouldn't say that its too late. top dresing is a must and some straw would help in the really bare spots.
