I've been researching various preparation techniques before laying new sod. The current grass is in okay shape (not all dead) but I want new sod. Can I till the current grass into the soil, add amendments and such, then lay the new sod? Or does the current grass need to be removed first?

Remove that old grass. If you till up that old grass that may cause havoc down the road in terms of thatch problems and drainage issues. Just rent a sod cutter and remove the old grass. Add amendments if needed.
