I have a 1996 Dodge 2500 Ext. Cab SLT 4x4. I need to get new tires, and I was wondering if 285's would fit in the wheel wells.

Yes, absolutely. With the stock rims you should have no problems whatsoever.

Just watch out for the tire hitting the ball joint when loaded or turning.
I've seen quite a few that rub a little with relatively "calm" tire sizes.
