Not winning many estimates this year!

    I live in NJ and it seems like the prices must be going down or a lot of lowballers or something...out of 5 estimates last week I got 1..
    They were all about a half acre or a little less gave them all an estimate $40 ..just a basic mow trim edge and blow..are prices going down this year I've been charging the same thing for a few years and never had a problem winning bids

    How do you know you're losing the bids due to the price? Many other factors could be at work here.

    That's true...I'm just guessing price...I believe I do very good work...I have a very low turnover rate..

    One way to find out, call the homeowners and ask them for feed back why they didnt go with your estimate.

    It's a small sample size too. You may get your next 10 bids in a row.

    give it a bit of time, I often find that some people hold of on a quote for a few weeks, then when you arecertain they went with someone else, they call out of the blue

    I've been working a different angle. It's a trust thing. I'm pulling back on getting customers based on price. I'm really picky on getting new ones now. I'm concentrating on the ones i have, and getting references from them (word of mouth). The customers i get don't worry about price all that much, they just want someone their friend can recommend. I probably could get more customers, but for me, right now, i like how this is working.

    word of mouth is the best way of getting new customers. Try callling them up and ask why they didnt choose you. I would think prices wouyld increase due to higher gas prices, and everthing rising in price

    Maybe that is too basic for some of them. Every one of my clients has some type of special request, be it Fertilizer apps, light tree trimming, once a year gutter cleaning or letting their dog out. Toss out ideas for improving the landscape, it will give you a feel for what they want to spend and how much interest they have in the appearance of their property.

    On a side note, I lost a bid recently, and it turns out that the people were offended that I offered a few different price options. According to a mutual friend, They think I think they are cheap:laugh:

    But most importantly, don't let a few lost bids get you down. If you're landing 20%, you just need to give more estimates.

    I used to live in NJ, and my brother still lives there. When we mention to him about getting into lawn care, he mentions about how many others there are in it and all the competition you would have. I've wondered though if you could still do well if you worked hard and completed your jobs well. I didn't get into it 'til I moved down here to VA, so I don't know how it is up there. Yeah, more competition but more people to work for. Here in VA, there are less people and less competition.
