Ohio Lawn thread

    Who here has dot numbers?? Never gave it much thought until I was looking at a thread about it on here. Obviously I am not at the present time.

    I should add that the truck I used in the past years has been a chevy 1500 and I know I was not over the limit with that. But now I am usiing a gmc 2500 hd.

    you still wont be over the limit. it's 26k combined weight in state, or 10k if you cross state lines. The whole inter and intra state BS.

    I found this though and what does this mean: seems like it says just because of the commercial plates that I should have the number??????

    Inter and intra state issues. If your hauling cargo or people inTER state (meaning across lines) you need dot, if you hauling hazardous material inTRA state (meaning within the state) you need dot.

    It's very confusing, I remember reading a law change and got freaked out that i needed DOT, i called all kinds of offices and no one knew anything, finally PUCO laid it out in easy terms and I've since gone to some seminars with state patrol officers giving speaches on it all. Since your in Columbus, I doubt your going out of state to work, so all you need to worry about is being under 26K combined, which you'd need like a triaxle trailer with 7k lb axles to get over 26 with a 3/4 ton.

    A certain lowballer that posts in the thread here is over weight with a 3500HD and a trailer thats rated at 14K lbs....COUGHclarkCOUGH OHHH SNAP!

    Thanks Kurt. That won't be a problem then. Truck is 9600 and trailier is 1400 empty of course.

    Kurt, you're probably right, but I was under the impression that any commerical vehicle 10,000 or over combined required a DOT number. The 26,000 is a CDL requirement. Weigh station signs say any commercial over 10,000 combined, you must stop.

    So if I have my truck at 5k lbs... and say and enclosed w/ 3 mowers weighing 12k lbs all together I need dot numbers?

    It's not actual weight, it's rated weight. Ya know like a f450 with a gvw of 12500 lets say and a trailer with a weight rating of 14000, you'd be 26500, so you'd need cdl and dot numbers.

    10K combined weight is for hauling hazardous material where you need a placard or inTER state driving, again meaning crossing state lines. Call puco and ask to double check I guess, but I've sat through too many classes.

    The other thing is you better have the truck stickered for what your hauling. I know I'm running illegal right now because I have the 8K sticker on my plates. If I got pulled over and they wanted to be picky, my truck DRY would be over weight (it weighs 8300 empty).

    My brother-in-law has a box truck that is 25,999GVW (under cdl) but weighs 10k. You stop at all weigh stations or get pulled over. 3/4 ton truck with a little 3k trailor pull in, your over.
    They want
    DOT #'s
    Name of business
    Log( for longer trips)
    Medical card ( for over 10k)
    one more thing I cant ramember. I got pulled over twice this winter

    so how much did you get fined?

    i got pulled over for no seatbelt last year, 3/4 ton truck tandem trailer with a skid on it, i was prolly at 20kish rating. the statey gave me seatbelt ticket, warned me on not having a tarp over the material in my bed, but said nothing about a dot number. hmmmm...

    the other thing is, dot really starts coming into play when your hauling other peoples stuff. and as a statey told me, the equipment is mine and the material is mine until planted. Again, id check with puco to be safe but ive already looked into it.
