Ohio: Purple/gray lawn disease ... fungus?

    I'm hoping someone can help identify the cause of the growing number of gray/purple spots in my lawn in SW Ohio. Each spot is 4-8" in diameter, and the affected blades of grass are covered with what appears to be a purple fungus (or perhaps lots of tiny purple eggs of some kind).
