I have an old lawnboy mower that I use for some trimming work. I could use it my home lawn, but it has always wanted to leave a small windrow of grass clippings. Will cutting the guard that goes across the bottom of the discharge fix the problem? I'm about the only one that uses it.

Cutting that brace will make it more resistant to clumping and clogging if that is what you mean. It will probably never clog if you cut that off. It will not really take away from the structural integrity of the machine too much unless you like to make it a habit to run into trees or bricks :p Also that brace might be necessary for a mulching and or bagging kit if you ever do any of that stuff. Just a thought.
I have two of them also, one steel deck one magnesium deck both push type. Love 'em. I made a striping flap and mulch plate for the steel deck one. I might even make a tine rake dethatcher for it too and get a bag because my next biggest machine is a 52" Scag w/b too big for some areas.
