Older 5 ton trucks

    How many of you guys have older 5ton or bigger trucks?
    I looking to buy a mid 80s to mid 90s to add the fleet.
    It will mostly be used in the spring for hauling mulch & topsoil to job sites

    Anything to look for or stay away from?

    Stay away from the 80-90 Ford F-700 F-800 I would be looking at International or Chevy. International trucks are good if I was looking at a 5 ton it would be a Ford Louisville 8000 best single axle trucks built.

    I would not buy one of those old trucks. They are expensive to register, expensive to insure, and tire, parts, and repairs are all expensive.
    A better option is to buy a dump trailer you can pull with a 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck. Way cheaper to operate, maintain, and insure. you can easily find one that will haul just as much as one of those old dump trucks.

    i have a '79 C65 chevy gasser. yes the tags have been expensive but i have run it for 2 years with no repair bills. it isn't the fastest truck but it gets there. also unlike a trailer it is able to tow a backhoe or skid to a site get loaded then tow the backhoe back. it is in the shop right now getting some preventive maintenance done. i like the gas engine because sometimes it doesn't run for a couple months. check the oil and fluids, start it and it goes. next week it will haul about twenty loads of gravel then go to another job to haul out stumps. it has paid for itself a few times over. of course when you get a truck for the price i did it's easy to do.

    Gravelrat what years for the Ford Louisville 8000 ?

    Mowingman great Idea! But we have a tow behind Bark blower that gets load from the truck.

    You will want to find 6 wheels and 6 tires you will want to replace those what look like 10.00-20 bias ply tires for 11R22.5 tires for one they ride better and two they are easier to find. The 22.5 dayton wheels will fit on the same spoke as 20 inch wheels.

    That era Chevy is common usually the cab is rusted through. Not sure if your going to like the 5+2 gearing you will probably go through a few 2 speed motors and lots of gear grinding :laugh:

    Nice looking old truck. Almost exactly like one I had several years ago. Mine was a 1979 model, had a 4/2 transmission, and a 350 engine.
    you will find that your truck is pretty nimble and you can get down the road pretty quickly after you get the hang of the splitter. It also should have a very tight turning radius, making it great for tight spots. Looks like you have a winner there. Good luck with it.
