I am negotiating the private purchase of a used JD 925A, with a 27HP Kawasaki engine (non EFI) and a 54" MOD deck with roughly 350 hours on it. Best price I could get was 6k.

It will only be used residential to cut my 1.5 acre lot. Does this sound like a good deal? In my head it seems pretty good, guess I'm just looking for some feedback please.

I wouldn't pay more than 5500. I believe that machine new runs around 7500.

Thank you, I called my local dealer and I am waiting on a quote. They did confirm that the MOD deck is about a 1k option

That is a fair price for a HO owned machine with that low of hours. The MOD deck adds about $1K to the initial cost +/-. That machine was a lot more than $7500 here when they stopped making the A model and went to the newer B,M,R models, of which the 925A is equal to the R model. More like $9K with the MOD deck.

JFYI- the 27 Kawi in that model is actually 24.5 HP under the new rating system which is accurate vs the system under which that engine was labeled. I say go for it if you are happy with the way it runs, drives, looks etc.

This was a commercial machine, however according to the owner wasn't used frequently since he has one with the larger deck

You don't need that much mower just to cut a lawn once a week. You could get a brand new estate model for less than that, that would last you for years.

My bad. I misunderstood the phrase "private sale" as meaning between you and another private citizen. Private individuals tend to take it easier and go slower than LCO's who depend on making time to make money. Commercial use would make me offer less no matter what the owner said about it. Offer him $5000 in cash and see what happens. Cash in hand is hard to turn down for what might or might not come farther down the road, especially since he's probably looking to reinvest it in another machine before the spring season gets rolling.

I don't at all consider a 54" deck as being too much machine for a 1.5 acre lot, especially if it's what you want and you can actually use it. It's your money and you only go around once........
