    The county extension groups and watershed tests, and all
    the enviro council concluded this so i dont have to
    get in big depth

    The soil in Lakes area in MN already contains sufficient
    amounts of phosphorus and the soil cannot absorb
    any more
    2) Banning all fertilizers that contain phosphorus because
    it is running or leaching off the soil into ground & lake
    water,
    3) The Mississippi river is found to have trace elements
    of all kinds of chemical compunds from estrogen to N.
    The Male walleye are changing into and having
    female traits, which is disrupting the breeding and behavior.
    They said it is the beginning of how animal change or
    become extinct.
    The only cause is unnatural chemicals. FINAL COMMENTS _----------I have came to the conclusion that all chemicals directly and indirectly have negative impacts on the environment which are not
    proven for maybe 100 yrs. later when some creature has already
    been mutated and it is obvious what the cause was.

    On the subject of Milorganite. How clean is it? The 2001 metals subject to no observable adverse effects standards under 40 CFR Part 503 (monthly averages, all values in ppm = mg/kg dry weight) were:

    How safe is Milorganite for use on the home garden? The above limits were based on a risk assessment that assumed 1,000 metric tons of Milorganite would be put on the same land, the worst-case gross abuse scenario, and still be safe. The home gardener pathway was not the most stringent or limiting for any of the metals, thus the federal limits have a higher level of protection than No Observable Adverse Effect for the home gardner. The Cadmium limit, for example, would be 120 ppm if based on the Home Gardener's exposure. The Most Highly Exposed Individual was generally Pathway 3, the toddler, ages 1 to 6, who for five years eats dirt and Milorganite in the backyard (200 milligrams per day, cuz its not tasty).

    If Milorganite contained any one metal at the limit it would be safe for use on the same garden for 450 years at an application rate of 45 lbs per 1000 square feet (2.2 mt/ha/yr). Lead is the most limiting metal, about 25% of the federal limit. Assuming an average lead of 75 ppm, Milorganite is safe for use on the same land for 1,800 years. How safe is Milorganite? Think in Bibical terms.

    U.S. EPA is considering a new standard for 29 dioxin-like congeners in biosolids. The risk assessment is on the web at www.epa.gov/ost/. The 29 dioxins, furans and PCBs are scaled according to toxicity, called Toxic Equivanlency or TEQ. National background levels of dioxin-like congeners were estimated at 27 parts per trillion TEQ, which is the limit adopted by the state of Maine for land application.

    In 2001, Milorganite's TEQ ranged between 4.5 ppt and 27.4 parts per trillion TEQ. It is not suprising to find background levels of dioxin-like congeners in sewage sludge. About 95% of human exposure to these dioxin-like substances is from consumption of lipits, that is, the fats in meat, fish and dairy. Humans then excrete most of the dioxin-like congeners to the sewer system. EPA's draft risk assessment concludes that there is no significant risk from biosolids with less 100 parts per trillion TEQ and frankly the public does not need a federal limit for protection. The trend is that dioxin-like compounds are decreasing in the atomosphere, levels in Great Lakes fish have dropped by 80% as of 1996. Total diet consumption has dropped even more.

    Several risk assessments have looked at metals in non-biosolids fertilizers. All the metals limits adopted to date are less stringent than the conservative risk assessment done by EPA for biosolids, except where a new parameter was added, like Cobalt.

    As for Milorganit's bouquet, it is an asset if one wants to repell deer in the spring from the tuplips. The fragrance, odor or bouquet seems to be active ingredient. But beware that fecal eating dogs are attracted to the same bouquet that repells deer. If fecal loving dogs eat too much, they will be sick for a few days.
