Hey guys, I mostly just do mowing so I need to ask an overseeding question. I'm going to overseed my lawn this fall with a slit seeder. My question is how short should I cut my existing grass(fescue) before I over seed? I've done the slit seeding once before but it was a total kill that I did at a friends house. That one turned out really nice. I don't need to kill off my existing lawn though. Just wanting to fill in some bare spots and make it a little thicker. Thanks in advance.

Start lowering the deck a little at a time, so your not taking it all off at once. You will need to cut it real short on your final mowing though because you wont be able to mow for a while until the new stuff establishes itself. Maybe someone else can chime in, can you mow about a week after slice seeding? Seed shouldnt really have germinated yet, and would keep the lawn back for a while so new grass would have better shot.
