    Hello All,

I am overseeding my 0.20 of an acre lawn this weekend and am deciding which grass seed to use. I'm in MA and currently have a fescue, KBG, rye mix. Please let me know your opinions of the following grass seeds (price is for 25lb bag):

Jonathan Green's Black Beauty Ultra: $89.99

    Jonathan Green's Sun & Shade Mix: $74.99

    Blue Seal EZ Green: $68

My backyard is mostly shade but my side yards are sun and shade. I think the above grass seeds are all premium types with very low weed seeds. Any and all advice/opinions/reviews would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

If your backyard is in the shade, you want some ryegrass in there. I would go with the sun & shade mixture.

Black beauty ultra would be my choice.

Thank you agrostis, you seem to be the only one who ever responds to my posts. It is much appreciated!

Anyone in Massachusetts use these seeds before? Advice/recommendations?

I know a landscaper from Lexington who dosnt use anything but JG ultra. I would use it on customers lawns but most fret about the cost of 3 way ( rye, TTTF, KBG)

Black Beauty regular (non-Ultra) was my first choice but all the supply stores seem to be all out of it. When I called one place they suggested the Blue Seal EZ Green and said they use it as a replacement for Black Beauty since it is cheaper. They said Black Beauty has 90% germination rate, while Blue Seal EZ Green has 85%.

Thanks for the replies! I think I might just spend the extra coin and get the Black Beauty Ultra. After reading reviews I found this:

Black Beauty Ultra grass seed mixture is as follow: 30% Dakota Tall Fescue 30% Montana Tall Fescue 20% Tombstone Tall Fescue 10% Blue-Tastic Kentucky Bluegrass 10% Frontier Perennial Ryegrass

Also it says Black Beauty Ultra is recommended for overseeding since it contains 10% Madison Kentucky Bluegrass and 10% Frontier Perennial Ryegrass. The bluegrass will help fill in any bare spots and the ryegrass will come up quickly

Not knowing much about grass seed, would you guys agree with the comments above?

I don't think 10% ryegrass is enough for the back yard. Use the ultra on the side yard's and something with more, like 30 - 50%, rye in the back. Or just buy some good ryegrass and add it to the ultra for the back.

I use John Deere Landscape (Lesco) Teammates Plus almost exclusively now. It's a TTTF, Bluegrass, Ryegrass mix.
