I was wondering what kinds of devices people used for pulling pipe, and which ones work the best.

I mostly pull 1" poly, and a limited about of 1" PVC mainline.

I have used the pipe socks (finger-type) and my impression was that alot people use these. But I've had some trouble with the pipe being lost when I'm pulling poly. (I have at least 8" of chain and a trailing bullet between the blade and the sock.)

Some other options out there are pulling eyes such as ( http://www.railhead.com/borepro12.html ) and wedge-type grips such as ( http://www.blazingproducts.com/products/grips/ ).

I was wondering what others use or have used and what they have to say about them.

    Thanks

The 'wedge-type' grips are specific to the OD of the pipe or tubing, and kind of a nuisance if you pull a combination of sizes, but they sure do hold on tight. The poly would break before it pulled out. If you have enough horsepower, your machine could just drag a loop of chain, or something similar.

Same thing as that blazingproducts grip (same family, different brothers/companies)

on poly i found you need to spiral the tape down the pipe 12" or so. helps the sock grip much better. also, socks do wear out and lose there grip after awhile.

I agree with paolaken, rapping the electrical tape down the sock locks the sock to the poly pipe.

we use a loop of chain. put the pipe through, kink it over the chain, step on it and go.

I used to use the finger trap thing. i hated it. taping the end, you can only pull one pipe at a time, loosing the pipe mid-pull, then getting it off is a pain in the but.

We used the standard chinese finger pullers, but we used PVC, so a loop of chain wouldn't exactly work.

Some of the 'converted sod cutter' pipe pullers needed a King Grip, or similar, due to the extreme blade motion.
