pipetracking

    can i stick the 521 hot wire into a water filled pipe and track the signal carried by the water?

    I have done it at 82.4kHz Rhett, but only for a short ways.

    a short distance would be not as far as one would like but further than Shoes will believe.

    If you wanted to experiment, you could make up a waterproof hot wire, and snake it into the pipe, and try tracking it. Opinions may vary as to how best to fabricate one.

    Boots, water doesn't insulate the signal any better than pipe does.

    Even without a path to ground the receiver coil can still detect the signal.

    The big problem lies with the path to ground.

    Due to the high voltages required to punch out a signal you give up distance.

    There's more to it but.

    With my Radiodetection RD 7000 I insert a "fish tape" with 14g attached to it in a mostly dry poly pipe and get an accurate trace. Good up to about 100' then it gets weaker but can get to 200' in some cases.

    I've been able to do it sometimes but the conditions have to be just right. Don't ask me what just right is, I don't know, just that I've caught it a couple of times and been able to trace a mainline route. I've traced copper water lines this way a couple of times as well, just clipped the 521 to the copper. I've also stuck a piece of wire into a pipe and been able to trace as far as I could shove the wire.

    I say experiment with it. It might not work but you don't really have much to lose other than the few minutes to setup the 521 and it could save you a whole lot of work.

    If the pipe is big enough you could use a "sonde" on the end of a fish tape, or the homemade version of a "sonde" (which is basically an irrigation solenoid attached to two wires and shoved down the pipe).
