I was wondering do you guys pitch the first 4'' of base you put in or do you tamp the first 4' level? And then pitch the last lift .Also do set the string lines for the top of paver or for the bottom when doing base?

1st. Cut out the ground where your laying the pavers, grade in the way you want it pitched.

2nd. Compact your QP or aggregate base in 2-3'' lifts, also keeping with your pitch.

3rd. Screed your mason sand with the pitch... this last process must be perfect... it will reflect the final grade of your project....

    - As for the string lines... We usually use them to represent about 1/4 - 1/2'' more than the final "height" (top of paver) of the project. The 1/4-1/2 will allow for final compaction.
