When planting a tree, how big should the hole be, and should the ball stick up above the ground at all?

I've always been old twice the root ball size, and the ball should not stick above ground...

twice the size, and 1.5 times teh hieght. and in the center of the hole should be a dirt "platform" for the ball to sit on.. if you have a very heavy/clay type soil, getting the root ball a bit higher would not be bad. but if you have soild with good drainage, stake it and level it. Don't forget to remove burlap and baskets...if if from a pot, remeber to cut an roots that are circleing the pot
