I use a blanket application of Trimec every spring for dandelion control, with no problems. This year I had very few dandelions. But I'm wondering is there any need to do an application in the fall too, to prepare for next spring, or because Trimec is a Post M, will I just be wasting my time and money?

You answered your own question. Post emergent herbicides only control weeds that have germinated. Pre emergent herbicides control weeds by forming a barrier on the surface of the soil. The pesticide label will tell you how the chemical works, what weeds are controlled, when to apply. Follow the label instructions to avoid uneccesary chemical applications.

If I was to do only 1 app for broadleaf weeds, it would be in the fall, but doing a spring and fall app is acceptable, providing you apply according to the label.
