I have a customer who wants their backyard sodded with St. Augustine. It is a new construction, so there is no existing lawn. the area is 1700 square feet. (189 sq yards) This is my plan:

    - Till and level
    - Roll (with lawn roller) and water
    - Level (and fill if needed)
    - Lay sod and roll

    My costs are:
4 pallets of sod - $400 delivered (includes taxes)
    1 bag of starter fertilizer - $11.00
Rental of tiller for 1 day - $40.00
Rental of lawn roller - $10/day

    I estimate getting about $.55/sq ft to lay the sod x 1700 = $950
    + Prep at 8 hours X $30/hour = $240
    + Costs of materials = $475

Any topsoil or amendments will be extra mat. + labor

    Total price = approx $1675

    How does this sound ?

In NC you'd be looking at around 2k for that bid. $30 an hour is extremely low unless you're doing it yourself w/no eq. I always just figure in a flat rate of $90 an hour for the eq and man power.
