Question about a bed edger

I have a customer that is wanting me to install the plastic edging around the ornamental beds. I really don't like anything about the plastic edging and prefer trenching. My question is, since I can't talk them out of it, will a bed edger (gas powered) did a deep enough trench to set the edging and the back fill with the dirt it deposits in the bed? I have never used one of these edgers and don't want to do it with my spade.
    Thanks in advance

yes the will dig deep enough. Suggest you rent one with the invisable dog fence rotor, you don't want a wide trench.
