A dumb question I know, but I forgot which wires connect where on the solenoid. It's a Kohler 20 HP Command Motor. We have two bolts where it looks like wires can connect to. I can either put red and black on the same bolt, or red on one, black on the other.

Are you referring to the large terminals on the solenoid ? One side should be the lead from the positive terminal of battery and opposite side should be the starter lead. If it has 1 small terminal on front then that is for the wire from the key switch which should be hot when key is in start position. If there are 2 smaller terminals on it then one is for the hot lead from start switch and the other is for ground .
