I am at a loss. I have an upcoming project where I am putting together a raised patio which will butt up against vinyl siding. What is the best approach to make this look good as well as not damage siding?

I did the same thing with my steps. Yes use a waterproof membrane that can adhere to the plywood (overlapping 2-3" if needed) and build out from there. Build up your wall, raised patio or whatever. Use "j" channels to outline your steps and replace your siding. For added insurance I used some black flashing caulk behind the j channels where the wall met the block so no water would migrate.
