Here in the upper Midwest, most people have not begun to mow yet (later than normal years). My lawn is approx 2 acres, and I never rake out the embedded tree leaves in my lawn. I just mow when it needs to be mowed. My lawn always turns out as good or better than the rest on my street (even better than those who spend the time raking their lawn before the first mowing). I use a John Deere 727-A commercial Z-turn mower (plenty of suction and very fast blade speed). I also see some guys who power rake in early spring when small bluegrass plants are tender and growing in soft, mushy (loam) soil.

Is raking a waste of time? Does power raking do more harm than good?

I have my opinion, what's yours? Thanks

p.s. Yes, those are rein deer in the upper left....don't ask:laugh:

Personally I am not a fan of power rakes. I like the idea of the JRCO de-thatcher. As far as raking leaves. If there is a heavy accumulation then yes I do like to get em out of there. Otherwise they make for good nutrients for soil.

Happy Spring Ryan. You will probably have no grass where the leaves are. it looks like you waited a little to long before the grass greened up.
