I am going to be installing a new walkway and rasied porch for a customer, and have a question regarding the porch. The current porch is wood and will be removed. it is surrounded by the concrete foundation on all sides with the exception of the front. The question is can I build the front out of retaining block and then fill in using the existing concrete foundation? What should the fill be? 3/4 rock and then stone chip on top? Is there a better way than just a hand tamp to compact this area before putting the pavers on top? It is about a 6' x 6' area. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

3/4 granular as a base and sand bed for interlock stone. Hand tamp will work but why not use a jumping jack or small wacker. What is the sub base material, clay, sand, stone? Picture of the area would be helpful too.

is the existing foundation concrete or block? what good would come out of working with the existing foundation? With that said, we'd either work around in or remove it.

oh! and since all that matters is that the "customer is happy", what did they spec???
