Look for catepillars---gypsy moth catepillars start very small, and grow rapidly by eating lots of leaves. Call your extension agent.

Recommendation from U of I extension service in paper today. Tie a rope around trunk of tree towards the lower end of the trunk. Take a cloth of some sorts (burlap, towel, etc) and stuff it behind the rope so that it drapes over both sides of rope. Gypsy moths are suppose to move under the cloth at night for cover. Check the cloth for gypsy moths. If they are under the cloth, collect and kill (put in freezer, wrap in tight plastic wrap, drench in soybean oil, etc. These are U of I recommendations, not mine). Good hunting!
