The old mulch calculator won't help me with this one.

If I know I'm going to use 150 cubic yards of mulch and spread it at 1", how many square feet am I going to cover?

Depending on which source I use as a mulch guide, I come up with different answers. I come up with anything from 25,000 sq ft up to 45,000 sq ft.

I'm inclined to believe the 40,000 to 45,000 sq ft number - anyone have any thoughts on this?

A cu ft covers 12 sq ft at 1" if it's installed perfect:)

    150 cu yds= 4050 cu ft = 48,600 sq ft

Now I'd go with your figure of 45,000 sq. ft.

Golly - if only I could think in simpler terms. That makes a lot of sense. Thanks Paul.

It was one of those jobs that I could estimate the number of yards of mulch by counting them as I walked through the site, but did not have a square footage measurement. In my bid I wanted to say: "Mulch xxx sq ft of beds....". So I needed to know how many square feet would be covered with 150 yards of mulch at 1" thick.

Odd I know. For most jobs anyways, I don't measure square footage, I estimate it by feel, as some areas I'll go with 1" and other areas I'll go with 2" depending on what's in the bed and how much is already existing. So I count 'em as I walk through the property.

My supplier has always given me the following:
1 cy covers 160 SF at 2 inches...

    according to that:
    150 cy would cover 24k at 2 inches 48k at 1 inch..
Has worked fairly well for us..
