OK so this 8.5 hp motor fouled a plug so I went and got another one. After running for about 15 minutes I started to get flames out of the muffler. So much that the soot covers the handle on the left side.

Any ideas why it would do this?*trucewhiteflag*

First, I'm not real familiar with the Robin-Subaru and it configuration. I've seen about 3 in the last 15 years so I have no preconcieved ideas of any usual problems with the engine.

If your plug is fouling I would suspect an over fueling problem, possibly to the point of a needle/seat seeping thereby allowing fuel to settle in the muffler. Not knowing the configuration of the engine some fuel may be entering the engine block as well. Once started and the muffler heats enough you get ignition in the muffler. I had a Briggs recently that the carb was leaking and the block was overfilled with half gas/half oil. Have you checked to oil level to determine if it is over filled or have you been aware of excess fuel usage?
