Hey guys. I've got a bit of a problem. We have to install a flagstone or similar type of rock stairway. We will be using slabs of rock as the tread for the walkway, but does anyone have any ideas as to what we should use for the riser part of the step? If we don't put anything, the dirt will more than likely washout from under the tread in time. Any ideas? Thanks!

use large stepping stones as your steps. this will take care of the tread and riser aspect all in one rock. if you remove the soil and put a couple inches (or more depending on your elevation) of gravel dust to create a bed for the stone step you will not have a problem with the stone moving or soil eroding. after the steps are in place mulch will cover up the extra gravel dust that is visiable on the sides and front of the steps. hopefully that helped, good luck.

Yea I would use a very think fieldstone and build it like you would a retaining wall.
