I have a Statesman lawntractor with an 18 h.p. twin cyl on it. Tonight during cutting , the motor started to run away. Throttle control did nothing and I quickly shut it off. I checked the linkages and they all seem good. Does this sound like just a govenor adjustment to anyone or do you think something let loose inside? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks Sorry I forgot to include this is a briggs Intek

Brand/model numbers would have been nice, The governor arm could have slipped on the shaft or the governor gear assembly failed. Check the adjustment first, If that doesn't solve the problem then it's tear-down time.

Drain the oil first then remove the engine from the tractor, Flip it up side down and remove the pan/sump.

The hardest part may be getting the pulley/clutch if equipped off, They do like to stick sometimes.

I don't have my manual here right now to give pan/sump torque specs and pattern but make sure you get them for re-installation. Once the engine is open make sure to clean all the old governor pieces out of the engine, After the new governor is installed make the static adjustment BEFORE starting the first time.

Should be able to do this little job in a hour or so.

    Good Luck

Make sure the throttle plate hasn't come off the throttle shaft.

This was a governor that blew apart....(lots of fun)......I just got a new governor assembly put it on and the lock ring, but can somebody tell me where that little cone type thing goes. Common sense says it goes on the governor shaft but dosen't go down all the way because of the flange on the bottom. I need to get a new book...I have nothing on a 18 hp Intek and the B&S site show the assembly but not how it goes together. It was in about 20 pieces when I opened the block Thanks
