On the day of the Summer Classic All Star Game, a pioneer has died in baseball. I've been a Red Sox fan from birth, and Yankees and George Steinbrenner have always been a pain in the arse. But George really excelled at building his company and Yankees brand. Bought the team in the early 70's for $8.5 mil, and it's now worth over $1.5 billion and is one of the most widely recognized brands in the world. As much as he was a PITA, he should be commended for how he brought back pride and respect to the Yankees. Even John Henry, the principal owner of the Red Sox, had great praise and respect for him, even as his greatest competitor. He would have been a great guy to have a beer with and learn business from. But make sure he picks up the friggin' check. So long George.
