I forgot a head, and was going to try one of those "blazing saddles"; has any one ever tried one of these before is there a better way of fixing this problem?

Yeah, I use them all the time, reduced installation time by about 1/3, they seem to work best with 1" poly though and are best at flow rates of 3-4 Gpm or less, they are very tough and can tolerate being ran over a few times as well, without leaking when used with head directly mounted, works very well with funny pipe and can be bought with funny pipe nipple, not many using yet, not sure why, I have asked for performance data and have not rec'd yet but have pretty much figured out. We used around 4,000 of them last year.
They are more expensive but I think it pays for itself in productivity. I am never going back.
They claim to offer 41.5% LESS flow restriction than an insert fitting and they are very easy to install.
Try them, you will like them
