A CUSTOMER WHO AM DOING A LOT OF WORK FOR WANTS SOME CHERRIES...COLUMNAR SARGENTII...TO BE EXACT....AM HAVING A BIT OF A DILEMMA...TO PLANT NOW AS THEY WISH OR WAIT UNTIL SPRING? I AM UNDER THE IMPRESSION(WHICH MAY BE INCORRECT) THAT IT IS BETTER TO PLANT A DECIDUOS TREE IN THE SPRING.

Fall is a great time to plant especially here in the south. Gives the plant that extra time to establish before it gets hot and dry. I prefer to plant larger trees when they are dormant. A lot less stressful to them. We need to get rid of the myth that spring is the only time to plant.

Actually the opposite is true. Decidous are best planted out in the fall and evergreen are best planted in the spring. Planting in fall does as said above. Establishes before harshness of summer. Evergreens can suffer dessication if not established before a hard freeze.

some trees and plants only move best in spring,
Birch and Oaks move best in spring, same with most Malus and flowering trees. Evergreens move best before they start to candle and after they candle.
