Scag PTO Removal - Need Advice.

    We blew a motor on a Scag 48 Tiger Cub with a FH641V Kaw. I need to remove the PTO to change out engines. However, after I undid the bolt that threads into the crank, the PTO appears to be a little more difficult to get off (stuck). I don't believe there's anything else holding the PTO on but I don't want to bust up a good PTO by forcing anything (I'm already having to spend $1000 on a new engine). Should I put a gear puller on it? If so, should I use a hydraulic puller or s it safe to use a threaded one. Thanks for the help.

    Is the engine still on the unit or off ?

    The engine is still on the unit. I can't remove the engine until I remove the PTO. The Pto is too large to fit through the hole in the chasis.

    Wasn't sure, Some will. Anyway I have never used a puller, They can cause damage/bend the clutch backing plate.

    I insert a short 2x4 or anything that will fit between the clutch backing plate and unit frame then hold downward pressure while tapping on the other side of the backing plate. And of course the use of penetrating oil.

    Like Rob, I like to get something up between the frame and clutch backing plate but I like to thread a longer like threaded bolt in the crank then use an air hammer on the bolt while maintaining downward pressure on the clutch.

    That's a good idea Dutch, Will give the air hammer a try on the next one....

    Are you using the air hammer to turn (spin) the crank while you're applying downward pressure on the clutch backing plate?

    If so - it won't work this time for me as the engine is partially siezed. But it does sound like a good idea for the future.

    No, There is a larger hammer bit you can get for a air chisel. Screw another bolt (longer) besides the one that holds the clutch on into the crank and while holding down-ward pressure buzz the head of this longer screw with the hammer bit in the chisel.

    I've been away all day. Rob has the idea and I should have been a bit more clear. I use a flat round headed hammer bit used to drive out u-joints. I've only had one that did not respond to this treatment and it was one on a Great Dane Chariot that had a locked up top bearing in the clutch. The bearing had gotten exceptionally hot and had spun on the crankshaft as I recall.
