It is a one middle wheeled one converted to two outside wheels.

I'll take more pictures tomorrow. It has been raining today.

If I use this combination muffler manifold will I have to tune the carb to settings other than stock?

Alright I finally got time to work on the mower.

I removed the Kawasaki FH500V-BS09 engine last night. It looks like it was only running on one cylinder. There was a lot of oil dirt buildup on the right cylinder.

What might cause such a large build up of oil?

The first two pictures show the "bad" cylinder and the last picture shows the clean other cylinder.

Well got the head off the bad side and the intake push rod is bent in a straighten S.

    What might have caused it?

    The valve springs both compress?

Would a warped head cause this?

Improper or lack of adjusting the valve lash. Overheating is also known to do it. Are you still planning to re-ring it?

I am having doubts about boring, new piston and rings, and valve job. I could get that all done for under $250, but I might be leaning more toward getting a Briggs Vangard 16 HP to replace it to be on the safe side.

I am open to any advice or suggested engines to fit my mower.

I've been waiting to see if you re-ring your engine because I have a 19hp Kawasaki I have been wanting to tear down for smoking issues too.

Well I have decided to forgo rebuilding the FH500 after persuasion from several people. I have decided to replace it with a Kawasaki FS481V-S26, which is what Scag uses on their current 48" belt driven walk behind.

Thanks again for everyone's advice and input.
