I have a Scag walk behind with the Kawasaki FV420 engine. The clutch started to work intermittently. I found that the connections from the stator harness to the regulator had become brittle and the connections had a great deal of corrosion. I replaced the connector and the clutch would still work infrequently. I checked the clutch gap and it is ok. I went to the switch to check for voltage and I only had 5 volts dc. I unplugged the stator and I get 30v AC at 3200 rpm. The regulator is an epoxy sealed unit. I only get 5 to 6 volts dc from the output wires but I get 10v dc from the two wires that go to the capacitor. Would my regulator be defective based on what I have reported?

    Thanks.......

Update, Fixer67 came to the rescue again and suggested a few things to check. I had a high resistance connection on the regulator output wire. Cut out the problem, spliced in a new connector and we are back in business. I cannot thank Fixer enough for all of his help and advice not just for me but for all of the people who he has helped on this forum.
