Scale on ruellia, I have seen it all

Discussion in 'Florida Lawn Care Forum' started by Florida Gardener, Mar 17, 2011.

  1. Wow, scale I think is the most common pest here. I have now seen it abundant on goldmound, seen it on copperleaf, Hawthorne, podocarpus and now ruellia...

  3. Well mike best thing to do with the ruellia is hack it down as it will come back right away...best nit to use chems when you don't have to. Unfortunately, the scale on the podies was a week ago when I installed about 50 of them but I just hand picked them as there weren't many on each plant. It seems that scale will attack a healthy or sick plant, doesn't matter.

why would you spray it with an oil or drench it for the upcoming season? If it has scale it may spread to other plantings then return after it grows back from your "hacking" There is a reason for using insecticides and this sounds like a good one.

  5. If I cut off all of the foliage that the scale is on can you explain to me how they will come back???

are you under the impression that the scale only lives in the nursery where you got the ruella? By treating you also prevent future attacks on this and other plants on the property. Works out to be a quarterly service up and above your mowing fee. Added service. Selling up.

  9. I am not an idiot I do limited stuff. It's a friends property. I just try and avoid chems if I can. If the hacking back doesn't work I suggested chems to them. I don't maintain their property.
