I'm replacing the crank shaft leaking seal on my mower. Should I coat the outer edge of the new seal with oil before installation? I saw this on an automitive repair show.

    Ditto. Restrorob.
If you lube the outer edge it will pop back out.

I always install seals with a fingertip smear of sealer on the OD. Usually Permatex non hardening.
It's also a good idea to lube the lip/s with some grease before the install.
