Have a client who has a backyard with thin, spotty grass. Sprinkler system is going in soon. They are interested in having sod put down. Area is roughly 3000 sq feet. Soil isn't the greatest. Is the best way to rototill the grass and existing soil. Rake out clumps and stones, then add an inch or two of loam, then finish up with the sod?
Have done plenty of sod with new construction, never over existing...

After the system goes in bring in about 3 inches of topsoil ,roundup the old lawn if you have to.

Get a soil test. See why the old grass wasn't surviving. We put down sod over existing grass with pretty good success.

Old grass wasn't surviving as it was a new home and topsoil washed away....most of it that is. Left with crappy soil and stones, and of course thin grass! Originally was going to top coat the whole place with 1" of loam then hydroseed or seed...looking for other options.
