Some mechanics these days

    This is the 3rd time my machine has gone in for warranty work. TWO different dealers and every time I get it back somethings not right. First and second time machine had screws missing or lose and broken plastic clips. This time I got machine back I noticed my fuse cover missing. And I noticed jumper wires connected to my seat switch. I said umm. Let me see if I can start machine and run deck without me on seat. Sure enough deck was running without me on machine. I took jumper wires off and put plug back into its original place. This could have a serious safety issue. Has anyone else had problems like this? This seems to happen also with my car getting work done also. Too many people are in a hurry and things are broken or missing.

    it not really mechanics it's the people scheduling there work and try to shove so much work down there plate they can't keep up. They have them jumping around from job to job so some things get overlooked

    Study the machine learn to fix yourself what I did got tired of driving to old dealer multiple times for bad fixes or stuff I asked to be replaced not being replaced. I went one day 5x

    Learning engines now my weak point.

    been down that road. tried to adjust the valves on my kawi myself. stripped the bolt out. :laugh:

    Yep

    Somedays had 5 cars at a time.

    that reminds me i just got the oil changed in my truck yesterday. why do mechanics always get oil on top of the engine? are they just that sloppy? or are they in that big of a hurry where they just sling everything around?

    sounds to me like places need to hire more help and quit putting such heavy loads on people.

    had to buy a new battery for the truck. new belt for the mower tomorrow.

    **** happens. Some engines are worse than others

    Sometimes there's no room for anyone else. I worked in a 7 bay shop with 8 people and had two lifts of my own

    Some engines are designed in a way that spilling oil when removing the filter is un avoidable. Not sure about your specific application...

    I'm guessing you have never worked flatrate before. Hiring more people takes money out of the pocket of the current techs, unless the shop can really support another tech. When I was flat rate in a VW/Audi/BMW shop, it wasnt uncommon to be working on three cars in three bays at any given time. If you have to wait for parts, and dont have another car to work on, you arent making money. You only get paid when you are billing hours. You cant bill hours waiting for parts, so you open another work order on the next car, and get to work while your waiting for parts for the first car. Even if parts are coming from another local dealer, an hour wait is too long. If you were good and stayed busy with multiple open orders, you could get paid 60 hrs for 40 hrs worked. However if the shop hires more techs, you may only be able to bill out and get paid for 30 hrs during a 40 hr work week.

    Chances are, any tech who is swamped with work in a flat rate shop, doesnt want anyone to be hired and lessen the load. Its all about billable hours. And warranty doesnt pay the same hours as as customer pay, BTW.

    no i'm not talking about the oil filter. i'm talking about on top of the engine where you pour the oil into it.

    heck i would change the oil myself if i could. i used to do it all the time on my 1988 toyota truck. now on my 2009 they have 2 different oil drain bolts and the oil filter is way up in there where you can't get to it unless you have the truck up on a lift which i don't have.

    they also try to confuse the crap out of people. the manual says use 6.1qts when you do an oil and fliter change. you use that much and it's way over the full mark on the dipstick. you use 5 qts it's at the full mark on the dipstick. many people put 5.5qts and go with that. the dealer always puts 6.1qts in it. i just let them do it and i don't fool around with it anymore.

    my old truck is was easy. it said use 4.5qts and that amount went right to the full mark on the dip stick. the oil filter was easy to get to right above the right front tire.

    heck i don't care to do it anymore anyways. to me it's worth it to pay someone else to do it. i'm getting a new deck belt tomorrow. it's worth it for me to pay them $25 to put it on for me. that way i don't have to fool around with it out there sweating in the heat. :laugh:
