i mostly use straw bales for seedings but have an upgrade option to peat moss with which ive had excellent luck with germination and coverage for the seed. the only problem is that its a pain to spread.

what ive been doing is opening up a 5 cu. ft. bale in a wheel barrow and then using shovels to shake it down over the ground. but doing this with 10+ bales takes a long time and is very dusty.

    anyone have any other ideas?

ive also used the pelletized paper mulch product for the first time last year on a small repair. can this stuff be put through a spreader or how do you put this down?

They make a peat spreader, or you can make your own, with 1/2 inch hardware cloth. It's just like a lawn roller. Except that the surface is hardware cloth instead of solid steel. Put a trap door in it, fill it up and roll away. Try this http://www.emeraldseedandsupply.com/lawn/index.html

I've seen them made using hardware cloth, that's the wire stuff like a bug screen with 1/2 inch weave.
