Thought I would share my story for a few of the others like me on this site.

Part time. Shop teacher 9 months out of the year. I own a fully legit design build company about 5-7 years in. Our focus is really planting design and hardscaping. We do no lawn mowing.

I use sketch up and iPad to create my designs, but my favorite medium is still pens and chartpak markers. Totally mac/apple based.

Our strengths are creative designs, and computer based communication in our area. Our weaknesses are organization, new to industry mistakes, and only a 2 month hardscaping season due to teaching.

Here is the "afters" from a large job this summer.

    -Comments and criticism appreciated.

Looks really nice! I worked in brick and stone masonry for years and did some paver jobs back then but haven't done any since I got into lawn maintenance. Your pics are giving me the itch to add that back into our services :)

looks good. But one question, what is the 4" pipe for that is next to the boulder in the first pic?

That is a drain waiting for a nice custom brass drain gate.

Actually I went a little overboard with drainage on this particular job and I really did not need the drain. I was not sure how large of boulders the customer would select and I did not want water flow to get trapped behind the boulder. In the end the pitch of the fire pit area and the pitch of the main area worked perfectly and made this drain not really needed.

    Good question.
