The pinion set (4114 640 7300) inside the gear head assembly (4121 640 0100) of my STIHL model FS56 weed trimmer is shot. This is a very old machine. STIHL wants $125 for a new pinion set and plus I would need bearings. I cannot justify $200, but the engine runs great. I want to purchase a gear head on EBAY but nothing matches the FS56 model number. Some look like they will work, but I cannot be sure. There are even pinion sets available for much less, but none match the part number exactly. They look the same, and even the part numbers are close, but no match. There is very little information on the web regarding the FS56. This is an odd ball model according to my email exchanges with STIHL directly. They were of no help, and neither are the STIHL dealerships. "Buy a new one!". The machine has a 24.0mm straight tube. Is there another gear head out there that will fit a 24.0 mm tube? Maybe even a Craftsman, Echo, or something. I am quite handy and can do some alterations or make bushings if necessary. Even if I have to dedicate it to a string only. The attached drawing is of the tube interface that I drew. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

I have the whole gear box assembly taken off mine and will sell it to you if interested. I pulled it off and made it a tiller unit.

That's likely going to be your best bet because coming from someone who has owned nothing but Stihl's (I lied, 1 echo)
for the past 10 years, you can take my word for it that if the part numbers don't match... I've cross-fitted certain parts
too but in terms of where to put your money you'd be as well off buying 40 lottery tickets and hope one of them wins
you enough money to buy a whole new trimmer (and if all are losers, so are you).

Let me put it another way...
I've got a whole BOX (and not a small one) FULL of Stihl parts, some of which I came about thinking like you,
that I could make something fit (and then I couldn't) and I'm not saying it absolutely won't fit but you take
your chances as there is no way for anyone to tell you whether or not it will.

I would get the correct part, maybe a used one, but the right part number or a whole new trimmer.

What model did the gear box come off of? Do you have a picture?

An old FS56? The full model number is FS565AVE. It was a model with the tank on top. I really need to see a picture.

No, its one of the current ones. I can post a pic for you tomorrow if need be. If it is like most Stihl equipment the gearboxes are interchagable but not the parts inside.

The newer models are interchangeable, but not the older ones. I tried to fit a newer model head, it did not fit.

If you can get a pic, measure the tube interface diameter accurately, and measure the end of the square shaft on your tiller, I may be interested.
