I have a stihl hs85 hedge trimmer, and it takes a long time pulling to start and after it finally starts it will only run for about a quarter tank of gas then it dies, acting you let off the throttle and put a load on it.
    Any sugestions.....

The problem is that it could be many things causing the hard starting and stalling. Electrical components usually fail when hot so it "could be electrical". Check for spark when it dies. It is probably a fuel metering issue. Anything that would restrict the flow of fuel to the engine. Hard starting or lots of pulls to get running sounds like the carb is not full or is not pumping enough fuel. There is a diaphragm pump on the carb. There could be dirt in one of the passageways in the carb. It could be the impulse hose from the crankcase to the carb. The crank seals could be leaking. Two strokes have to have an absolute seal on the crankcase. It could be the fuel pick up in the tank. The list goes on and on. I would lean towards carburetor trouble from your description though. Hope this helps.

Check the spark arrestor in the muffler It could be clogged up. When you pull it does it sound deeop? If you run it too rich the muffler wont let exhaust out because it gets stopped up. You can remove the spark arestor for good.
