Stone suppliers give samples?

I primarily just do maintenance. But a customer has asked me to layout a bed around some evergreen shrubs in her front yard and install decorative stone in the bed.

She tried to describe a stone that she saw somewhere once, but I'm not familiar enough with stone to know what she's referring to.

My question is, if I go to a supplier with a rough idea of what she wants, will they give me a few samples of stones that fit her description that I can take to her?

Is that out of the ordinary, or standard practice?

    Thanks.
