I have an Echo string trimmer. Lately when I'm putting in new string after about 5 mon. of using it one of the lines flies out and I'm left with one line to trim. what's going on?

If it is a new head the cord is bad try another brand. If head is not new replace it the edges on the eyelets may be worn. And runing the cord too deep in the ground when edging will do that....slow down and use the tip only.
