suggestions for repowering an old ford

    This is my 1970 f100 4X4. It was my daily driver forever, and I restored it once along the way. I parked it about 12 years ago when I needed a bigger truck. Now I want to bring it back to life again with my oldest son for him to drive when he is 16. But I want to swap in a more fuel efficient driveline, so he can afford to drive it. It weighs around 4000 pounds and came stock with I think 170 hp? (360 fe V8)

    So I think weight wise it would be similar to an SUV or a Dodge Dakota/Toyota T100. It has a cavernous engine bay, so pretty much anything would be lost in there. I would want to keep things stock so the original 360 can go back in one day.

    Any suggestions?

    Hard to beat the simplicity of a 5.9 12 valve with no electronics even a 4BT with a few mods would have enough power and killer mpg's.

    BT4 cummins or better yet a Ford 4.6 with an 5 speed mazda transmission that Ford used for a lot of years.

    Find a wrecked F150 with that engine and whatever drivetrain and swap it in. If you buy it whole you can use the computers engine, transmission and transfer case.

    Even with the 360 FE engine you might be able to rebuild it and put a good cam/carb setup that would be suitable. If you can find a good Ford Mechanic it would be doable.

    A small diesel. Thats a good idea. I never thought about that. Not sure if the old V8 could ever be tuned to the point that a kid could afford to put gas in it.......

    The 4.6 is a solid engine too. If taken care of is an easy 250,000 mile motor or more.

    Here is a good article to read about a 4.6 It would be cheaper than a bt4.

    Second the diesel option. If its gas, I'd say a inline six cyclinder.

    289 or a 302 with a 2b carb.
    Then put in a lower gear ration in the differentials. If the truck has 4.11's changing to low 3's will also make a difference.

    I would do the gears first.

    I think Ford made a decent 300 cubic inch straight six. GM also made a decent 292 straight six.

    283 always gav better mpg then 6 cyl's. Don't know about 289 but willing to bet the farm on them being better as well.
