Either would work, and would it work on a 36" snapper belt (i think) dive or not?

Well, yea, it will pull you around But it will wear out the belts/trans quicker and that will cause problems down the road for you. Also depend on your weight, the lighter you are the longer it will last.
I know of a guy that had a 48 Snapper belt drive, he had to give it alittle help ( he was close to 300 lbs) to get it to start moving, it was great on flat ground once it got going.
Hydros are the way to go if you want to ride or stand, less problems then the belt drives.
