Summer groundcover before fall reseeding?

I'm itching to do a backyard renovation that will require a lot of grading and planting. I'd like to do it in the next few weeks during nice weather and sales at the local nurseries.

The problem comes with about 2000 square feet of bare ground I'm going to have after the grading. I'm doing this on the cheap, so I'd like to avoid sod and seed tall fescue in the fall. What should I do for groundcover to prevent erosion this summer? Will annual rye have time to establish and keep the soil in place until fall? Will fescue planted now stand any chance to establish and make it through the summer? Any other suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!
