Super-Z HD vs. Lazer RED EFI

    Yes, I work 5-1 five days a week. Off on Wednesdays. Long story, but I'd need to mow over $60K more in lawns to make up for this. Right now, I'll take it as it comes.

    Tough call - I wasn't a fan of the cheetah either when we demoed for a day. Would be fine in a 72 but I prefer the turf tiger or wildcat in a 61. Scag does have the Kohler efi in the tiger though.

    We tried a super z with hyper drive and the new deck and it threw out plenty of grass turds just mowing thick lawns. Cut quality was comparable to the velocity deck with dull blades - not carpet smooth. The 31 Kawi (old rating) sucked down a ton of fuel compared to the same engine in our 2010 super z.

    Not knocking you young man, but how much time did you run both? You're only 14 so I doubt they brought them out and let you take them for the day.

    you know what you like, and while you're convinced that the Hustler is superior to other Z's (though after looking them over for quite a while last year trying to decide, I still am not. Just a difference of opinions we've had before here;)), it seems to me that you are making more and more of an argument for the Exmark as this thread progresses. No rain or dew to contend with, you operate your own machine etc etc. As I said earlier in this thread, it seems like a no brainer to me other than the RED being a first year product.

    I am leaning towards the eXmark. But then I think of the speed that'll be missed, the ability to plow through DEEP grass like its nothing (VX4), and I start to doubt myself.

    There is no doubt in my mind that the SuperZ is the best/toughest Z on the market right now. They just need an EFI option.....and to fix this discharge issue.

    Doubt they will fix the discharge ... the VX4 is no good, they need to get a new deck out asap, cant see them fixing the VX4 without a re-design.

    If you currently have a VX4 and having issues with the cut, then you'd be mad to buy another :)

    Im going to agree with Ridin'. Your only cutting in dry conditions, why not go with the machine that arguably cuts the best in those conditions? Plus you wont have to deal with Hustlers customer service, the very reason I would never own one even if they fix thier QOC.

    Really is a shame about the VX4 and the discharge. Thing is, if it wasnt for the line of clumps it would be a great deck. I get a good spread of clippings at times and it works great when doing true long 2 or 3' bush hogging type type stuff.
    The tractor is great except for a few small annoyances like the fuel tanks. There are a lot of positives about the machine, but the clumps are just soooo frustrating it isnt funny!

    Fuel wise, I average 3.5hrs out of a tank or approx 7hrs of run time. Thats with around 50lt of fuel and it working hard. Im ok with that as the power really comes in handy at times. EFI/DFI would be great though!
    Leaving the clumps out of it, if your mowing large areas then the SZ is awesome. The speed, the hydros, deck is able to get clippings out, able to do very steep slopes, flex forks etc etc. The cost of extra fuel will be made up on how much ground you can cover. On larger props, I can get up to 30% more done than the old 31/60 XR7 SZ.

    All I can say TLS is to demo it on your properties etc. You know the drill! Not everyone is having the clumping problems and if you can be one of them, I would get the SZ. If you get the clumping then anything else is a better option. Simple as that!

    Mick, as you know from our previous discussions, I was noticing this discharge clumping on the second year demo.

    My buddy actually ended up buying this demo unit. I'll let you know what he says.

    TLS, I'm right there with you brother. Shopping right now myself with these two exact mowers on my short list along with a JD 960r and Cheetah. 2.0 gph is terrible. You'll hate it but will love the power. Filling the 920v up almost twice as often as my SZ. Old EFI Kohler on my xr7 66" is gutless but sips fuel beautifully. Hustler shows a BB Kohler EFI option on there web site but says is only for CA!?!?!

    One thing I will say, and I can't stress this enough, the one item you can not take from LS opinions is QOC. I don't care what mower it is or who it is unless they're your next door competition. Moisture, grass type, speed, weed content is everything. Mic's situation sucks, and I by no means want to belittle his situation because I really feel for him, but it won't keep me from checking a SZ out for myself on my grass type. The mower rocks in most every other aspect. Another thing to think of is if you slowed your SZ down to 11.5 (exmark speed) or slower, the discharge may also change on the SZ. Would be hard to do after being use to Hustler speeds.

    Then you have the ride issue. Exmark is finally offering a real seat instead of two boards nailed together but no flex forks. The Lazer I believe also has a shorter wheel base which makes the ride worse but does help to squeeze in a tighter area maybe. The HD seat looks to be even nicer than the new lazer seat. Someone can correct me but I believe it may be air similar to Gravely. My dealer contact told me it not only allows for the up and down motion but also forward and aft and the forward and aft can also be locked out. The remindes me of the optional rocker platform that Hustler offered on the pre vx4 models. Then you have the over sized 26" rear wheels on the HD which I would think would help with traction, ride quality, and spreading out the extra weight. Again depending on your properties and with a top speed of 11.5 on the Lazer it may be a non issue.

    Not to sound like I'm harshing on Exmark either but has anyone ever gotten over-the-top service from them? I've been working with the regional rep and dealer two states away (yes I said to states away) and still haven't figured out if I can even demo a Quest E let alone a Lazer X. That being said I'm having similar problems demoing the 960r and cheetah as well do to my location.

    What I think I need is a SZ HD with ff, pro iron 7 deck (though I've never used one), Hustler striper, Red BB, Hustler warranty. :laugh:
